Al Ahly roar back to life with dominant derby win over Zamalek
Al Ahly delivered a statement performance on Friday that could define their season after dismantling fierce rivals Zamalek with authority and intent.
The emphatic three-goal victory was more than just another step in the domestic title race. It signaled a resurgence, a bold declaration that the Red Devils are rediscovering their identity at a crucial stage of the campaign. After moments of inconsistency, including a recent setback against Pyramids FC, Al Ahly turned the page in style, reigniting belief in their ambitions both locally and on the continental stage.
From the opening whistle, Al Ahly imposed themselves with confidence and precision. Their dominance quickly translated into goals, as Achraf Bencharki broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, finishing off a swift attacking move that caught Zamalek off guard. The pressure continued to mount, and Hussein El Shahat doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark, capitalising on a defensive lapse with a powerful strike.
The second half offered brief moments of drama, with both sides missing a penalty each, but the outcome never looked in doubt. Bencharki returned to the spotlight in the 74th minute, calmly adding his second goal of the night to seal a commanding 3–0 victory.
Despite Zamalek enjoying more possession, controlling 56 percent of the ball, Al Ahly proved far more dangerous in the final third. Their 15 attempts on goal, combined with a higher number of clear-cut chances and greater presence inside the penalty area, underlined a performance built on efficiency and attacking intent rather than mere control of the ball.
Bencharki stood out as the game’s defining figure, tormenting the Zamalek defence with his movement and finishing, while El Shahat’s energy and influence across midfield and attack added another layer to Al Ahly’s superiority. In contrast, Zamalek struggled to find rhythm, with defensive frailties exposed repeatedly and attacking efforts failing to trouble their opponents in any meaningful way.
This victory not only strengthens Al Ahly’s position in the league standings but also injects renewed confidence into a side that appears to be peaking at the right moment. With continental ambitions still alive, the message from Cairo is clear: Al Ahly are ready to fight again.
