Al Ahly agree two-year contract extension with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir

Al Ahly have agreed a two-year contract extension with goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, keeping him at the Egyptian club until the end of the 2028-29 season.

The 26-year-old is currently in the final season of his existing agreement with Al Ahly, but the new deal will extend his stay for a further two campaigns. The agreement represents the latest step in the club’s efforts to retain key members of their squad.

Shobeir will become the fourth Al Ahly player to renew his contract in recent weeks, following Emam Ashour, Marwan Attia and Omar Sayed Moawad.

The goalkeeper has made 72 appearances for Al Ahly since establishing himself with the first team. He has kept 39 clean sheets during that period and conceded 46 goals.

Shobeir has also represented Egypt on the international stage and played a significant role in the national team’s progress to the last 16 of the World Cup. Egypt’s campaign ended in that round after a 3-2 defeat by Argentina.

Although Egypt were eliminated by the eventual strength of their opponents, Shobeir produced an impressive individual performance during the tournament. He saved two penalties taken by high-profile opposition players in separate matches.

In the group stage, Shobeir stopped a penalty from Iran forward Mehdi Taremi. He then repeated that achievement in the last-16 match against Argentina by saving a spot-kick taken by Lionel Messi.

Those saves were among the notable moments of Shobeir’s World Cup campaign, as he helped Egypt reach the knockout stage before their narrow defeat by Argentina.

His proposed renewal means Al Ahly have now secured the future of four players within a short period. The club’s agreement with Shobeir also ensures continuity in the goalkeeping position, with the player set to remain part of the squad through the 2028-29 season.

Shobeir’s record of 72 appearances, including 39 matches without conceding, underlines his importance to Al Ahly. His performances for both club and country have strengthened his position, while the agreement over a new contract prevents his current deal from reaching its conclusion without an extension in place.

The new arrangement will run beyond the current season and keep Shobeir at Al Ahly for two additional seasons. His contract renewal follows those of Ashour, Attia and Moawad, making him the latest player to reach an agreement with the club over his future.
