The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco is ushering in what many describe as a new era of sporting excellence on the continent, with the current edition marking a historic turning point in the tournament’s evolution.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the championship is undergoing a significant shift in organisational philosophy and logistical planning, as Morocco sets new benchmarks in infrastructure and event management. The provision of international-standard stadiums and the unprecedented allocation of a dedicated training ground for each participating national team have elevated the quality of competition and established a new reference point for continental tournaments.

This transformation has drawn strong praise from the Confederation of African Football, with CAF Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba emphatically stating that the “Morocco 2025” edition will be the best-organised in the history of African football. His remarks reflect growing confidence within CAF that the tournament will surpass previous editions in both structure and delivery.

Offering further insight, national sports analyst Mehdi Kessou described the competition as exceptional in every sense, noting, “This edition will be exceptional by all standards, as it brings together the various participating teams under one ambition, which is to win the title.”

Speaking to Hespress, he explained that “despite what may distinguish these teams in terms of the quality of players or human composition, the common denominator among them today is the availability of favorable conditions that allow everyone to compete in the best possible way.”

From an infrastructure standpoint, Kessou emphasised the decisive role played by Morocco’s facilities, stressing that “the positive role played by the sports facilities available in Morocco remains a crucial factor, as it is rare to see official stadiums that fully meet the specifications set by the African Football Confederation and have all the elements of success.”

He described this as “a key strength that contributes to the success of this continental event.”

He further highlighted the quality of the training pitches, pointing out that “each participating team has been allocated its own independent training pitch, a first in the history of continental competitions,” adding that this arrangement “creates a positive impression among the various teams, allows them to work in a comfortable environment, and ensures a smooth scheduling of training sessions, according to a precise program coordinated with the teams’ supervisors.”

Assessing Morocco’s broader role as host, Kessou noted that the country “can be considered a rising power in organising major sporting events on a global scale,” describing AFCON 2025 as “a true rehearsal for upcoming major events, most notably the 2030 World Cup.”

He added that “the accumulation of organisational experience remains a positive factor within the Kingdom, especially since Morocco has previously organised and successfully hosted major sporting competitions, leagues, and events in recent years.”

On the commercial and fan engagement front, Kessou also pointed to CAF’s marketing efforts as a major success, particularly in relation to match attendance.

He observed that “the Moroccan public’s football culture and the fans’ passion for attending matches were reflected in the high demand for tickets, with a near-complete sell-out and all tickets placed on the official CAF platform being sold out,” describing this as a strong indicator of the tournament’s appeal.

Transportation has equally been identified as a critical strength of this edition. According to Kessou, the tournament benefits from “excellent connectivity between the various cities,” explaining that “highways provide suitable conditions for smooth travel, and roads within cities have also undergone significant development and improvement, especially in the host cities.”

He further noted that “the transportation system, both land and air, has witnessed remarkable progress, with Morocco now offering a significant number of daily flights between the Kingdom’s cities, in addition to connections with numerous international destinations.”

Sports journalist and media professional Adel Rahmouni also described the Morocco-hosted AFCON as special and exceptional, citing several factors that set it apart. Speaking to Hespress, he said that “the edition of the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament that will be held in Morocco is special and exceptional for several reasons,” highlighting “the outstanding organization” and adding that “the stadiums and infrastructure have been prepared in an excellent manner, especially since the stadiums are equipped with the latest technologies to provide the best experience for the teams and fans.”

Rahmouni further praised Morocco’s renowned hospitality, noting that “the warm hospitality remains one of Morocco’s strengths, given the good reputation of Moroccans for their hospitality, which made the teams and guests feel comfortable and welcome during their stay in the country.”

He expects the tournament to deliver intense competition and a high standard of performance, enhancing excitement and suspense throughout the event.

Beyond football, Rahmouni observed that the tournament’s impact extends into cultural expression, pointing to “organising cultural and artistic events that reflect Morocco’s rich and diverse heritage, thus enhancing the value of the African event.” He also highlighted the influence of large and passionate crowds, saying they “will create a fantastic atmosphere in the stands and motivate the teams to give their best.”

He concluded by emphasising the role of modern technology in the tournament, stating that “technological development, through the use of modern technologies in refereeing and monitoring matches, will contribute to improving the quality of play and ensuring sporting fairness.”

AFCON 2025 kicks off on Sunday, December 21, with Morocco set to battle Comoros in the opening Group A fixture. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8pm.
