It is a question gaining traction in South African football circles: is Abdeslam Ouaddou quietly heading toward a surprise exit similar to the shock retirement once made by AB de Villiers?

The Orlando Pirates head coach has raised eyebrows after openly admitting that fatigue could shape his future, despite delivering one of the most successful debut campaigns in the club’s modern era.

Ouaddou has transformed the Buccaneers into a dominant force, steering them to a historic treble that includes the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup and Betway Premiership title.

Yet, even as silverware filled the cabinet and expectations soared, the Moroccan tactician has stopped short of committing to another season in Soweto. His comments about energy levels and personal wellbeing have now triggered speculation that success may have come at a cost, and that an unexpected departure could be on the horizon.

A treble-winning debut season at Orlando Pirates

Few debut seasons in South African football have carried the weight and impact of Ouaddou’s first year in charge. He not only restored consistency but also delivered trophies across multiple competitions, elevating Pirates back into continental contention and domestic dominance.

The treble has already secured his place in the club’s recent history, with supporters hailing a new era of discipline and attacking efficiency.

However, the triumphs have also intensified the spotlight, with expectations for sustained dominance now firmly placed on the coach’s shoulders. That pressure forms the backdrop to his recent remarks, which have introduced uncertainty into what otherwise appeared to be a long-term project in the making.

Fatigue comments spark uncertainty

Rather than celebrating continuity, Ouaddou’s latest reflections have shifted attention toward his personal condition and long-term motivation. His candid admission has unsettled supporters, particularly given the timing after such a successful campaign.

“People have to understand that I’m an honest man. Like I said, I’m not chasing contracts,” said Ouaddou.

“The difference between me and some other coaches is that, thanks to God, I don’t need money because I played football for 17 years. I have a choice to continue or to stop.

“Why am I saying that? Because to manage and bring happiness to millions of people at such a big club, you need to be fit and have energy.” the Pirates coach added.

“If you are tired, it’s not honest to go into another season because you are not going to be honest with such fantastic people. So, I’m just an honest coach who says things from the deepest of his heart.”

The remarks have left the door open to interpretation, with neither confirmation of departure nor commitment to continuation, but a clear emphasis on emotional and physical exhaustion.

Echoes of AB de Villiers’ shock retirement

The situation has inevitably drawn comparisons to one of South African sport’s most surprising career decisions. In 2018, AB de Villiers stunned the cricket world by stepping away from international duty despite still being at the peak of his powers and widely expected to lead South Africa into the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

“I have had my turn, and to be honest, I am tired,” De Villiers said at the time, adding that he was “running out of gas” after a 14-year international career.

His retirement initially appeared definitive, yet controversy followed when he continued to feature in franchise leagues, including the Indian Premier League, and later expressed interest in a possible international return. That sequence of events sparked debate about whether fatigue alone fully explained his decision.

Fan speculation and what comes next

Against that backdrop, some supporters now wonder whether Ouaddou’s comments signal a similar trajectory, where success is followed by an unexpected step back before a potential return elsewhere. There is, however, no confirmed indication that he is preparing to leave the Soweto giants.

What remains clear is that his reputation has grown significantly in a short time, making him an attractive figure beyond South Africa. Whether his future lies in continuing to build at Pirates or pursuing a new challenge abroad will depend on how he reconciles achievement with the demands of elite management.
