Martin Odegaard gives Arsenal narrow win over Hull City to preserve Premier League lead
Arsenal maintained their position at the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Hull City at Emirates Stadium in the 10th round of the season.
Martin Odegaard scored the only goal of the match as Arsenal secured an important win before the international break.
The result takes Arsenal to 27 points, leaving them top of the Premier League. Hull City remain on 11 points in 13th place.
Odegaard’s goal was his first in 16 successive Premier League matches in which he had failed to score.
The Arsenal captain was also one of only two players to have created five or more chances in more than one Premier League match this season. The other is Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal press but Hull threaten
Arsenal created the first clear opportunity after six minutes, when defender Gabriel headed over the Hull City goal.
Hull then came close to taking the lead in the 19th minute. Elliot Stroud received a precise pass and found space before striking firmly towards the bottom-left corner, but Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya reacted well to keep out the effort.
Arsenal had another chance in the 36th minute when Christos Tzolis met the ball with a header from inside the penalty area. His attempt went straight into the arms of Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
The visitors’ goalkeeper was called into action again 12 minutes after the interval. Noni Madueke unleashed a powerful shot in the 57th minute, but Tzolakis made an excellent save to prevent Arsenal from breaking the deadlock.
Madueke was involved in the decisive moment 16 minutes later. His shot from outside the penalty area was saved by Tzolakis, but the ball fell to Odegaard, who followed up to send the rebound into the net and put Arsenal ahead.
Hull were unable to find an equaliser, while Arsenal looked to extend their advantage. Mikel Merino headed towards goal in the 88th minute, but his effort was safely held by Tzolakis.
Arsenal ultimately held on for the victory and moved into the international break with their position at the summit secure.
