Fouzi Lekjaa set to step down as CAF finance committee chair ahead of 2030 World Cup

Fouzi Lekjaa is preparing to resign as chairman of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) finance committee, while retaining his position as the organisation’s first vice-president.

The Moroccan official has taken the decision because of the demands associated with leading the committee, according to Moroccan website Hesport. The role requires frequent travel and a significant time commitment to oversee the various files connected with CAF’s financial administration.

Lekjaa’s expected departure is part of an effort to reorganise his priorities and devote more time to his responsibilities in Morocco, both in sport and government. He is also expected to become more involved in preparations for the 2030 World Cup finals.

His resignation from the finance committee would not represent a withdrawal from CAF’s structures. Lekjaa would continue to serve as first vice-president and remain part of the leadership of the continental governing body.

During his time as finance committee chairman, Lekjaa gained considerable experience in overseeing important matters relating to governance and financial balance. He also worked on controlling expenditure and strengthening CAF’s financial resources.

The decision would therefore end one of his most prominent responsibilities within African football, but would leave him in a senior executive position at CAF as preparations for the 2030 World Cup develop.
