Cardoso praises Sundowns’ discipline after Carling Knockout semi-final qualification
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has praised his players for their discipline and commitment to instructions after they secured a place in the Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Iqraam Rayners scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute as Sundowns claimed victory at home in Tuesday’s quarter-final encounter.
The result secured Sundowns’ place in their second successive cup semi-final this season, having lifted the MTN8 trophy last month.
Although Cardoso believed his side could have settled the contest much earlier, he was pleased with the overall performance and, in particular, how effectively his players executed the game plan.
The Portuguese tactician highlighted the importance of having players who are willing to learn, adapt and implement tactical instructions on the pitch.
“I think the team was very, very loyal to the plan, which is very important for the coach,” Cardoso said.
“Last week, I was speaking about coachable players. I was saying how important it is that they absorb the tips that we give them, the small indications that have come from one match, and sometimes are different, and how absorbing them and putting them into practice on the pitch makes them stronger.
“I think we were very committed, a very solid performance, and obviously, we’re very happy to be in the semi-finals of this competition,” he added.
Sundowns will now turn their attention to the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of another domestic cup trophy this season.
