Fabian Ruiz became only the second Spanish player to score twice against another Spanish side in Champions League history as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday.
The result, secured in the fourth round of the league phase, also gave Villarreal an unwanted record. They became the first Spanish team to lose a Champions League match at home by a six-goal margin.
Ruiz scored Paris Saint-Germain’s fourth goal in the 17th minute, before adding the fifth shortly after half-time, in the 55th minute. The Spain international’s two goals formed part of a dominant display by Luis Enrique’s side against the team known as the Yellow Submarine.
According to statistics from Mister Chip, Ruiz is only the second Spanish player to score a Champions League double against another Spanish club.
The only previous player to achieve the feat was Miguel Angel Angulo, who scored twice for Valencia against Barcelona in a 4-1 victory in the second leg of the semi-final on 2 May 2000.
Villarreal’s heavy loss also surpassed the previous worst home defeat suffered by a Spanish club in the competition. Deportivo La Coruna had previously held that unwanted distinction after losing 5-0 to Monaco on 8 December 2004.
Ruiz’s goals against Villarreal mean the record has now been rewritten, while Paris Saint-Germain’s six-goal victory marked a commanding night for the Ligue 1 side in the Champions League.
