Mohamed Salah set for Turkish citizenship and state honour after stunning Trabzonspor impact
Mohamed Salah is reportedly set to receive Turkish citizenship alongside his family and be honoured with the country’s State Medal for Distinguished Service following his impressive impact since joining Trabzonspor.
The Egyptian forward has enjoyed a remarkable start to life in Turkey after leaving Liverpool in the summer, quickly establishing himself as one of the standout performers in the Turkish Super Lig.
Salah has registered 10 goals and five assists in 13 appearances across all competitions for Trabzonspor, justifying the club’s decision to secure his services on a two-year contract.
His influence has extended beyond the pitch, with his arrival reportedly contributing to a significant increase in interest in Turkish sport and tourism.
According to BBC Arabic journalist Mohamed Kaoud, Turkish authorities are working to fast-track the naturalisation process for the 34-year-old, his wife and their three children.
Kaoud also reports that the former Liverpool forward will receive the State Medal for Distinguished Service in recognition of his contribution to the country’s sporting and tourism sectors.
“I have learned that Mohamed Salah will “definitely” be granted Turkish citizenship. Officials from Trabzon are currently working with Turkish state authorities to expedite the naturalisation process for the Egyptian football icon, as well as his wife and their three children,” Kaoud wrote.
“Furthermore, Salah is set to be awarded the ‘State Medal for Distinguished Service’ during a major ceremony, and will receive a high-level honour in recognition of his contribution to an unprecedented surge in both the sports and tourism sectors in Turkey—all achieved in record time.”
Salah’s remarkable start at Trabzonspor
Salah’s performances have quickly endeared him to Trabzonspor supporters, with the forward making an immediate impression following his switch from Merseyside.
His return of 10 goals and five assists in 13 matches highlights the influence he has brought to the seven-time Turkish champions.
He also made history by becoming the first player in Turkish league history to record 10 goal contributions in his first seven appearances for a club.
The Egyptian has seamlessly adapted to his new surroundings, with his performances attracting widespread admiration from supporters who have quickly embraced him as one of the team’s leading figures.
His arrival was also accompanied by a lucrative two-year contract that placed him among the highest-paid players in the Turkish league.
However, his early performances suggest Trabzonspor are already receiving significant value from their investment.
Turkish honours await Egyptian forward
The reported decision to grant Salah and his family Turkish citizenship would represent another significant milestone in his career, which has already seen him establish himself as one of the most recognisable footballers in the world.
The proposed State Medal for Distinguished Service would further underline the influence he has had since arriving in the country, with his popularity reportedly helping to generate increased attention for Turkish football and tourism.
Salah remains contracted to Trabzonspor until June 30, 2028, giving him another two seasons to continue building his legacy in Turkish football.
At 34, the forward appears to have plenty left to offer, with his performances suggesting that his move away from Liverpool has provided a new platform to extend his career.
Trabzonspor will next turn their attention to their UEFA Europa Conference League assignment against Freiburg, with Salah expected to remain central to their ambitions.
