FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono devastated after Jesus de Miguel’s death

FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has been left deeply affected by the death of Jesus de Miguel after the pair collided during Monday evening’s match.

The 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international has since deleted his social media accounts following serious accusations directed at him over the incident.

Owono was subjected to abuse as he left the pitch, with supporters reportedly shouting “assassin! assassin!”, according to Spanish newspaper AS. The publication added that similar messages had flooded his social media accounts in the hours that followed.

Meta, the company that operates Instagram, has also closed Owono’s account.

People close to the goalkeeper said the collision was entirely unintentional and stressed that Owono is a caring and friendly person who had no bad intentions.

He was reportedly deeply distressed during the journey home. AS described the situation as one of “extreme concern” and said the goalkeeper had experienced “very difficult hours”.

Owono was seen crying and praying in the dressing room after the match.

The goalkeeper’s club, FC Andorra, offered its condolences to De Miguel’s family, team-mates and friends, as well as to his club CD Tenerife.

“With broken hearts, we offer our sincere condolences to the family of Jesus de Miguel, all his team-mates, friends and CD Tenerife. Rest in peace,” FC Andorra said.

A minute’s silence will be held in memory of De Miguel before all European matches this week.
