Jesus Owono at centre of tragedy following death of Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel
FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has found himself at the centre of a tragic incident following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel after a collision during Monday’s Spanish Segunda División encounter.
The 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international was involved in a collision with De Miguel during the closing stages of the match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium.
Owono rushed out of his penalty area to challenge for a long ball but collided with the Tenerife forward, striking him in the chest with his knee. The incident left De Miguel unconscious on the pitch and prompted players from both teams to urgently call for medical assistance.
The 30-year-old received emergency treatment before being transported to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he was admitted to intensive care in a critical but initially stable condition.
However, his condition deteriorated, and Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that he had died at 8:00 am following a cardiorespiratory arrest.
Owono was shown a straight red card following the incident, while the match, which was level at 2-2, was subsequently abandoned.
Spanish authorities have opened a judicial investigation into De Miguel’s death. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, although the opening of proceedings does not establish criminal responsibility on the goalkeeper’s part.
The tragedy has also exposed Owono to considerable abuse on social media, forcing the goalkeeper to deactivate his Instagram account following the incident.
