Nicolas Jackson leads Aston Villa’s charge against Barcelona in Champions League showdown
Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson will be hoping to continue his impressive goalscoring form when Aston Villa travel to face Barcelona in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter at Spotify Camp Nou.
The two sides meet on Matchday 4 of the league phase, with both targeting another important victory to strengthen their chances of securing automatic qualification for the round of 16.
Barcelona have collected six points from their opening three matches, recording victories over Feyenoord (5-1) and Galatasaray (4-1) before suffering a 4-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, have enjoyed a perfect European campaign so far, winning all three of their matches against Club Brugge, Fenerbahce and Viking FK to occupy second place in the standings with nine points.
The Catalan side head into the encounter following an emphatic 6-1 LaLiga victory over Alaves, while Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham in their latest domestic outing.
Barcelona face defensive injury problems
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick will have several defensive concerns heading into the contest, with Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Xavi Espart unavailable.
Dani Olmo and Roony Bardghji are also expected to miss the encounter, leaving Flick with limited options as he prepares his team for Villa’s attacking threat.
The absences could see Joao Cancelo, Gerard Martin, Pau Cubarsi and Alejandro Balde form the defensive line.
Lamine Yamal will be one of Barcelona’s main attacking threats after producing an impressive performance against Alaves, where he scored twice and provided an assist.
The Spanish youngster will also have an opportunity to break the record for the most Champions League goals scored by a teenager.
Pedri and Rodri are expected to play important roles in midfield, while Raphinha, Fermin Lopez and Anthony Gordon provide further attacking options.
Barcelona’s likely XI (4-2-3-1): Joan Garcia; Cancelo, Martin, Cubarsi, Balde; Pedri, Rodri; Yamal, Fermin, Gordon; Raphinha.
Jackson offers Villa attacking threat
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will also be without several players, with Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka unavailable for the trip to Barcelona.
However, the Spanish coach has no fresh injury concerns following his team’s weekend draw against Fulham.
Senegal international Nicolas Jackson is expected to lead Villa’s attack after making an encouraging start since joining the club.
The striker has scored eight goals across all competitions, including three in the Champions League, making him one of Villa’s important attacking options heading into the difficult away fixture.
Emiliano Buendia and Ross Barkley have also contributed important goals in Europe, while John McGinn is expected to provide experience and stability in midfield.
Aston Villa’s likely XI (4-2-3-1): Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Maatsen; Kamara, Joao Gomes; McGinn, Manzambi, Buendia; Jackson.
Barcelona’s possession against Villa’s counterattacking threat
Barcelona are expected to dominate possession, using their quick passing combinations, aggressive pressing and Yamal’s creativity to put pressure on the visitors.
However, their defensive absences could create opportunities for Jackson and Buendia to exploit spaces on the counterattack.
Villa have demonstrated defensive organisation and attacking efficiency in the Champions League, making them a difficult opponent despite their inconsistent domestic results.
Flick has praised Emery’s tactical approach, while the Aston Villa manager has described Barcelona as one of the contenders for the Champions League title.
Tuesday’s encounter will also be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since 1983, when Aston Villa defeated Barcelona to win the UEFA Super Cup.
