Bayern Munich assess Jonas Urbig after collision raises concussion concern

Bayern Munich are monitoring goalkeeper Jonas Urbig after he appeared to be suffering from dizziness following Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund, with a possible concussion threatening his involvement against Atletico Madrid.

Urbig was struck in the head by the knees of Dortmund midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka during the Bundesliga match at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The incident led to the visitors having a goal ruled out after Jobe Bellingham found the net.

The Bayern goalkeeper later made light of the collision in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

“Everything is fine, apart from the fact that I was hit in the face by two knees,” Urbig said.

Despite Urbig’s joking response, Bayern are treating the incident seriously and are closely following his condition for any further symptoms. If signs of concussion emerge, his participation in Tuesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid would be in doubt.

Bayern also face uncertainty over the availability of their experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. His chances of recovering in time and being fit to play against Atletico appear limited.

The German side will travel to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the fourth round of the Champions League. The match is particularly important for Bayern after they drew their previous two games in the competition.

They were held 3-3 by Norwegian side Viking before drawing 2-2 with English club Arsenal.
