Yan Diomande strengthens case to replace Vinicius Junior at Real Madrid

Yan Diomande produced a standout display as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday evening, strengthening the argument that he should start ahead of Vinicius Junior.

The Ivory Coast international caused Barcelona’s defence problems throughout the match and played a direct role in one of Real Madrid’s goals. His performance was also notable for the work he produced without the ball, as he supported Marc Cucurella in dealing with Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s star player, on that side of the pitch.

Despite his influence, Diomande did not receive the level of recognition his contribution deserved.

He repeatedly took on Barcelona defenders and completed a significant number of dribbles. His cross created the opportunity for Kylian Mbappe to score his first goal of the evening, while his ability to escape pressure kept Real Madrid’s attack moving.

There were several occasions when it appeared Diomande might lose possession, but he consistently managed to evade multiple Barcelona players. He also showed the quality to combine those runs with precise passes for his team-mates.

This performance, along with those in the matches that followed, has demonstrated that Diomande is currently a better fit for Real Madrid than Vinicius Junior. Jose Mourinho must recognise that as soon as possible.

Real Madrid require an attacking player who is willing to contribute defensively and accept the less glamorous aspects of the game. They need an winger who does not repeatedly make the game unnecessarily difficult by becoming stranded near the touchline while attempting to beat several defenders.

The ideal player must also understand his own limitations: when to pass, when to dribble and, above all, how to make a decisive contribution from the wing. Diomande displayed those qualities against Barcelona.

Vinicius Junior, by contrast, is currently not showing any of them, while Diomande appears to embody each one. The Ivorian does make mistakes, but he has showed an impressive ability to recover from them and continues to produce exceptional and consistent performances on the flank.

Vinicius Junior has lost confidence and is no longer displaying the obvious talent he once possessed. Real Madrid cannot continue selecting him in the hope that he will eventually rediscover his best form.

At present, Diomande is clearly outperforming the Brazilian and should start in his place for most matches.
