Brahim Hemdani may introduce a new face at left-back when Algeria meet for their next international camp, with the position no longer settled following the manager’s first squad selection.
Rayan Ait-Nouri’s falling-out with the coach and subsequent dismissal from the camp has opened the door to competition for the role. The defender did not play in Algeria’s 3-1 win over Zambia on 25 September, while Jaouen Hadjam became the undisputed starter during the most recent international break.
Hadjam again played the full match in the 2-2 draw with Burundi on 29 September. However, the former Young Boys player eventually appeared to struggle physically, possibly because of his limited playing time at Brighton. He was replaced by Ramy Bensebaini in Algeria’s 2-1 friendly victory over Niger on 6 October.
Hadjam’s club situation has not improved since the end of the international break. The Paris-region native has played only 11 minutes in the league, leaving Hemdani with a difficult decision to make before the next squad is announced.
Ait-Nouri is also highly likely to be left out after reportedly being unwilling to apologise to the coaching staff. That could give Fahed Benaissa-Yahia an opportunity, with the 24-year-old included in the extended squad according to El Heddaf TV.
Benaissa-Yahia is an established player for the Virgiliani, having made 11 appearances and 11 starts this season. He has scored one goal and provided one assist.
The dual-national can also operate as a wing-back, an option that could prove particularly useful if Hemdani opts for a back five. The system would provide Algeria with greater defensive security, while also allowing Benaissa-Yahia to contribute in a more advanced role.
Algeria will play Togo in Tizi-Ouzou on 14 November before travelling to Lome for the return fixture on 17 November. Both matches are part of the third and fourth rounds of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Fennecs currently lead their group, one point ahead of Zambia.
