Alvaro Arbeloa has described Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as one of the best coaches in the world and in Spanish football history ahead of Fulham’s Premier League meeting with Villa on 31 October 2026.
The Fulham manager and former Real Madrid coach spoke highly of Emery before the fixture, while also stressing the scale of the challenge facing his side. Aston Villa will play Barcelona in the Champions League four days later, on 03 November 2026.
Arbeloa said Fulham would need to produce a highly competitive performance to have any chance of taking all three points.
“If we want to win tomorrow, we have to be very competitive,” he said.
He also warned his players about the quality of their opponents, pointing to Aston Villa’s victory over Manchester City and the difficulty of overcoming a side preparing for a major European fixture.
“They are a very strong team and they have beaten Manchester City,” Arbeloa said. “We know how difficult it is to win against a team like them, especially as they will play Barcelona in four days.”
The Fulham boss made clear his admiration for the work Emery has done at Aston Villa, describing the Spaniard as an outstanding figure in the history of his country’s coaching and among the leading managers in the game today.
“I think he is one of the best coaches in the history of Spain, and he is currently one of the best coaches in the world,” Arbeloa added.
Fulham’s meeting with Aston Villa comes after a difficult start to the Premier League season. The London club lost each of their first three league matches before beginning to recover, with victory over Coventry in their most recent round of matches lifting them out of the relegation places.
The result moved Fulham to 15th in the table on eight points, between Manchester United and Tottenham. Arbeloa believes the team is starting to move in the right direction despite the quality of the test that awaits them.
Aston Villa face Fulham in the Premier League on 31 October 2026, before their Champions League meeting with Barcelona on 03 November 2026. The short gap between the two fixtures was among the factors highlighted by Arbeloa as he assessed the difficulty of the contest.
The Fulham manager will now look for further evidence of his side’s improving form against an Aston Villa team whose recent result against Manchester City has underlined its strength. Aston Villa’s European appointment with Barcelona will follow four days after the Premier League fixture.
