Lothar Matthäus has backed Joane Gadou to start ahead of Algeria international Ramy Bensebaini in Borussia Dortmund’s defence ahead of their Bundesliga meeting with Bayern Munich.

The former Germany international believes the young defender should be preferred to the experienced Bensebaini, pointing to what he considers occasional mistakes in the Algerian’s game.

Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten, Matthäus made his preference clear when asked whether Gadou should get the nod over Bensebaini.

“Yes, I think Gadou is stronger.”

His comments come as Dortmund consider their defensive options ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated clash against Bayern.

Matthäus questions Bensebaini’s consistency

Matthäus explained his reservations about Bensebaini, recalling the defender’s performances during his time at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“Ramy Bensebaini occasionally makes careless mistakes in his game.” I still remember him from his time in Gladbach. He’s a bit of a light-footed brother.”

The comments put the Algeria international under the spotlight as Dortmund weigh up their options at the back for the meeting with their Bundesliga rivals.

Bensebaini’s experience is a factor in the selection debate, but Matthäus believes Gadou should be given the opportunity to start.

Matthäus outlines his preferred defensive line-up

The former Germany international also offered a specific suggestion for how Dortmund should organise their defence.

“I would let Gadou play and put Anton in the middle.” He feels more comfortable there. Schlotterbeck can play both centrally and on the left side of the back three

Matthäus believes moving Anton into the central role would allow Dortmund to make use of the defensive versatility of Schlotterbeck while giving Gadou the chance to feature.

Dortmund now face an important decision over their defensive selection as they prepare to take on Bayern, with Matthäus making his preference for the young defender clear.
