Thierry Henry praises Bukayo Saka’s character after Socrates Award triumph
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has praised Bukayo Saka’s character and humanitarian work after the England international received the Socrates Award at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London.
Saka was recognised for his charitable contributions and efforts to improve the lives of children and families through humanitarian initiatives, including his work with the BigShoe organisation.
“That’s Bukayo Saka in a nutshell – a lovable guy and a great player,” Henry said, highlighting the winger’s humility, strong family support and commitment to helping others both on and off the pitch.
The Socrates Award recognises footballers who make significant contributions to humanitarian causes. Saka’s work with BigShoe has helped provide medical treatment for children, including life-changing operations and healthcare support for young people in vulnerable communities.
At the ceremony, the Arsenal forward also shared the story of a young boy from Rwanda whose eyesight was restored through the organisation’s work, underlining the personal impact of such initiatives.
Saka’s recognition comes during a challenging period for the 25-year-old, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury. Nevertheless, his latest achievement highlights a different aspect of his influence beyond his performances on the pitch.
Henry’s praise reflects the respect Saka has earned for combining his footballing ability with a willingness to support those in need.
The former Arsenal captain also discussed the club’s preparations for their upcoming Premier League trip to Liverpool, expressing confidence in their ability to cope with injuries and praising the contributions of players such as Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
However, Saka’s Socrates Award remained a standout moment, recognising the Arsenal star’s commitment to making a positive difference beyond football.
