The Soweto derby returns to FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Saturday, with Orlando Pirates hosting arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a fixture regarded as the biggest sporting event on the local calendar.
Although it is often said that form has little bearing on this contest, both teams will be determined to make an impact. The focus will also fall on several players preparing for their first appearance in one of South African football’s biggest matches.
Orlando Pirates
Simphiwe Masilela – attacker
Simphiwe Masilela has made a promising start since joining Orlando Pirates. The 22-year-old has scored once and provided one assist in 11 matches, but his pace and ability to beat defenders make him a persistent threat in possession.
His willingness to use tricks and flair has attracted some gentle criticism from head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The manager has urged Masilela to reduce the showboating and instead concentrate on finding productive positions in the final third.
Thapelo Mokobodi – midfielder
Thapelo Mokobodi arrived as Pirates faced a midfield injury crisis, with Makhehleni Makhaulala and Thalente Mbatha sidelined. He responded with composed displays at both ends of the pitch and has subsequently developed into an important member of the side.
His primary role is to connect the team’s play, but Mokobodi has also contributed decisive goals, adding another dimension to his growing influence.
Bulelani Sigomoshe – right-back
Bulelani Sigomoshe joined Pirates from Milford on the final day of the transfer window and was quickly called upon after regular right-back Kamogelo Sebelebele suffered an injury.
With the Bafana Bafana international unavailable for the derby, Sigomoshe is expected to help maintain the stability of the Pirates defence. His ability to move into midfield gives the team additional flexibility, allowing the back four to operate as a more cohesive unit when tracking back against the run of play.
Kaizer Chiefs
Thabo Moloisane – centre-back
Thabo Moloisane grew up in Soweto and has said he supported Kaizer Chiefs passionately from a young age. That connection helped make his move from Stellenbosch during pre-season a straightforward decision.
Chiefs have found it difficult to produce clean sheets consistently because of individual mistakes, but Moloisane believes defensive shutouts will come as the team develops greater understanding. His own performances have been dependable, with few errors since the beginning of the season.
Faiz Abrahams – attacker
Faiz Abrahams joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch on a season-long loan and hopes to earn a permanent move. He has settled quickly and has responded whenever selected.
The derby presents another opportunity, but Abrahams will need to maintain his standards as Chiefs seek victory against Pirates following last season’s defeat and draw.
Thulani Mabaso – midfielder
Thulani Mabaso is among the academy graduates hoping to impress coach Fernando Da Cruz. His opportunities have been limited, although glimpses of creativity have suggested he can contribute to the midfield.
A place in the Soweto derby would give Mabaso the chance to show he is ready for regular first-team football.
