Gavin Hunt praises Stellenbosch FC’s progress after Carling Knockout victory
Stellenbosch FC head coach Gavin Hunt praised his side’s discipline and squad depth after they beat former club Durban City 2-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 at Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result secured Stellenbosch FC a place in the quarter-finals, where they will host AmaZulu.
Hunt was particularly pleased that his players remained committed to their approach after creating opportunities before the breakthrough. Sinoxolo Kwayiba was involved in the chances that preceded the goals as Stellenbosch FC eventually established control of the tie.
The experienced coach also highlighted the contribution of his substitutes, who made an impact after coming on in the second half. Their involvement was important as Hunt managed his squad with another home fixture against Chippa United already in view.
Stellenbosch FC’s victory came at the end of a campaign in which the team have spent considerable time travelling. Hunt welcomed the prospect of finally playing at the Danie Craven Stadium, while expressing his frustration at the amount of travel his side have had to endure.
The win was also significant because it came against Durban City, the club Hunt previously managed. Stellenbosch FC kept their composure to see out the match and move into the last eight of the competition.
Hunt used his media duties with the KZN press to pay tribute to the late Les Grobler, the father of former PSL and Stellenbosch FC striker Bradley Grobler.
The coach also addressed the absence of continental football for Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, before concluding his discussion with the media following the cup victory.
Stellenbosch FC will now prepare for their upcoming meeting with Chippa United before turning their attention to the Carling Knockout Cup quarter-final against AmaZulu, which will be played at the Danie Craven Stadium.
