Saudi Arabia consider 30-man squad for Doha camp as injuries shape Georgios Donis’ plans
Saudi Arabia manager Georgios Donis is expected to finalise his squad next week for a training camp in Doha, as preparations begin for the Asian Cup 2027.
The camp will take place during the international break from 9 to 17 November and will include two friendly matches. Saudi Arabia will face South Korea on 13 November before meeting Uzbekistan on 17 November.
Donis is likely to retain many of the players involved in the previous international gathering, when Saudi Arabia won the Gulf Cup. However, injuries, disciplinary considerations and current form could all lead to changes, according to Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat.
Al-Juwayr and Al-Dawsari in contention
Musab Al-Juwayr is among the players who could return to the squad after missing the previous camp for disciplinary reasons. He was later seen taking part in Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Cup celebrations, and his involvement has raised the possibility of him coming back into Donis’ plans.
There is also particular interest in the position of captain Salem Al-Dawsari. He has recovered from the injury suffered at the end of Saudi Arabia’s participation in the 2026 World Cup and could be recalled, although the coaching staff have yet to make a final decision.
Hamam Al-Hamami remains doubtful after suffering a hamstring injury during the Gulf Cup final. He is continuing his treatment programme, while goalkeeper Nawaf Al-Aqidi is also unavailable because of injury.
The Saudi medical team is monitoring Al-Aqidi, Alaa Al-Haji and Al-Hamami almost daily, with Donis being updated on their treatment and rehabilitation. The staff are assessing whether any of the three will be fit to train and play during the Doha camp.
Donis hopes at least one of the injured players can return because of their importance to his plans. Al-Haji, who was injured during the Gulf Cup, is still receiving treatment and completing his rehabilitation, leaving the midfield position as one of the areas requiring a decision before the squad is announced.
Abdulrahman Al-Sanbi is an option to cover for Al-Aqidi. He was previously included in the preparation camp in the United States and continued training with Saudi Arabia during the 2026 World Cup, despite not making the final tournament squad.
Changes expected in defence
Hassan Kadesh’s long-term injury is expected to force another defensive adjustment. Ali Lajami is one of the leading candidates to replace him, having previously been included in Saudi Arabia’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Donis is also considering giving opportunities to younger players as he looks to reduce the team’s average age. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailm, the Al-Fateh defender, is a possible selection after impressing last season and being shortlisted for the Saudi league’s best young player award.
Saud Abdulhamid could also return after missing the previous international gathering through injury. The Lens defender has resumed regular appearances for his club this month, strengthening his case for a recall.
The final squad size has not been confirmed, but it could contain 30 players – four more than the previous camp. The larger group would allow Donis to assess more options amid the injury concerns and possible returns.
The friendlies against South Korea and Uzbekistan will give him an opportunity to test his choices before the next stages of preparation for Asian Cup 2027.
