CAF Champions League: Esperance Tunis face Petro de Luanda in Group A showdown

Four-time African champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis will face a stern test in Group A of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after being drawn alongside Angolan giants Petro de Luanda, surprise qualifiers Wiliete de Benguela and Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou.

The draw, held in Cairo on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, has set up a compelling group featuring continental pedigree, a domestic rivalry and one of the competition’s most remarkable underdog stories.

ES Tunis enter the group as the top seeds from Pot 1 and will be expected to challenge for qualification to the knockout stages. However, their opponents present different challenges, leaving little room for complacency as the Tunisian giants pursue another continental title.

Angolan rivals set for continental showdown

Petro de Luanda and Wiliete de Benguela will renew their domestic rivalry on the continent’s biggest club stage, adding another layer of intrigue to an already competitive group.

Petro boast considerable experience in African competition and will be eager to establish themselves as serious contenders for progression. Their familiarity with Angolan football could also prove valuable against Wiliete, who will be making their debut in the Champions League group stage.

Wiliete secured their historic qualification after producing a stunning upset in the second preliminary round, eliminating reigning African champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The achievement has established the Benguela-based club as one of the tournament’s surprise packages and raised expectations ahead of their maiden appearance at this stage.

Their inclusion alongside Petro creates an intriguing contest between an established continental campaigner and a club seeking to build on its breakthrough achievement.

Wiliete will hope their giant-killing run can continue in the group stage, although maintaining that momentum against experienced opponents will present a significant challenge.

FC Nouadhibou offer another threat

Mauritania’s FC Nouadhibou complete Group A and will be determined to disrupt the ambitions of the three other teams.

The club has grown in stature in recent seasons and will view the group-stage campaign as an opportunity to demonstrate its progress against some of Africa’s established sides.

With ES Tunis carrying the weight of expectation and Petro and Wiliete preparing for their Angolan derby, FC Nouadhibou could emerge as an important factor in determining the final standings.

The Mauritanian side will need consistency across the six-match schedule to challenge for a place in the knockout rounds.

ES Tunis face tough route to knockout stages

ES Tunis will be under pressure to justify their status as the group’s top seeds, but their path to the knockout stages is unlikely to be straightforward.

The Tunisian giants will need to navigate Petro’s continental experience, Wiliete’s confidence following their remarkable qualification and FC Nouadhibou’s determination to compete with the group’s more established names.

The group-stage campaign is scheduled to begin in November 2026, with each team facing the other three clubs home and away.

That format will place a premium on squad depth, tactical discipline and consistency, particularly as teams balance domestic commitments with the demands of continental competition.

Road to the finals

The high-stakes group stage action is officially scheduled to kick off with Matchday 1 from 27–29 November 2026, running through a fast-paced winter schedule that concludes with the decisive Matchday 6 from 22–24 January 2027.

Following the group stage, the tournament will transition immediately into its dramatic knockout phase, beginning with the double-legged quarterfinals in late February and early March 2027.

The semifinals will take center stage in April, setting up a thrilling climax for African club football, with the grand finals window officially locked in for May 2027 to crown the ultimate kings of the continent.
