Atletico Madrid monitoring Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United future remains uncertain
Atletico Madrid are monitoring Bruno Fernandes’ situation at Manchester United as uncertainty grows over the long-term future of the club captain.
The Spanish club are the latest European side to be linked with a move for Fernandes. Spanish reports, carried by Sports Mole, say Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany is closely following developments at Old Trafford.
Alemany is understood to be keen to bring the Manchester United captain to the Spanish capital, believing Fernandes’ creativity and ability to link midfield with attack could address some of the weaknesses in Diego Simeone’s squad.
Fernandes can operate behind the forwards or in a deeper midfield role, offering Atletico greater tactical flexibility.
Simeone is also reported to be potentially open to the move. The Argentine manager is looking for players capable of applying his high-pressing approach while taking responsibility when his side have possession.
However, any transfer would depend on Atletico reaching an agreement with Manchester United, and the Spanish club have not made a formal offer at this stage.
Fernandes’ contract situation could prove decisive. The Portugal captain’s current deal with Manchester United expires next year, although the club have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
That uncertainty has attracted interest from elsewhere, with reports also suggesting Italian club Milan are considering a move for the 32-year-old.
Recent reports have indicated Manchester United could now be willing to sell Fernandes. The club may first extend his contract before considering a departure, a step that would help protect his market value.
A move in January therefore remains a realistic possibility if Manchester United’s hierarchy decide the current transfer window represents the best opportunity to benefit financially from a sale. That prospect has been heightened by the uncertainty surrounding Fernandes’ future and the interest from several European clubs.
Speculation over a possible departure increased after Fernandes made angry comments following the defeat by Como. He was then left out of the starting XI for Manchester United’s match against Bournemouth.
According to reports, negotiations over a new contract have stalled. With the January winter transfer window approaching, Atletico Madrid could seek to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding the player’s position at Manchester United.
