Lazio moved provisionally to the top of Serie A after a 6-2 victory at Sassuolo, extending their winning run to five matches in the league.
The result was Lazio’s biggest win since the 2021-22 season, when they defeated Spezia 6-1. It was also a remarkable match for Romano Mussolini, who scored his first Serie A goal.
Lazio made the perfect start when Kenneth Taylor put them ahead after only two minutes. Sassuolo responded five minutes later through Kristian Thorstvedt, but the visitors regained the lead in the 13th minute as Gustav Isaksen found the net.
Romano Mussolini then added Lazio’s third goal three minutes later. Sassuolo’s hopes of recovering were dealt another blow when Thorstvedt was sent off shortly after the half-hour mark.
Despite being a player down, Sassuolo continued to threaten and reduced the deficit in the 43rd minute through Sebastiano Esposito.
Lazio restored their two-goal advantage in first-half stoppage time, with Mattia Zaccagni scoring in the 45th minute. The teams went into the interval with Lazio 4-2 ahead.
Zaccagni had the opportunity to complete his second goal soon after the restart, but Sassuolo goalkeeper Stefano Turati saved his penalty in the 50th minute.
The visitors extended their lead five minutes later when Tijjani Noslin scored Lazio’s fifth. Sassuolo were then awarded another opportunity to add to the score, but Davide Frattesi missed a penalty in the 61st minute after the goalkeeper made another save.
Noslin completed the scoring in the 65th minute, securing Lazio’s sixth goal and taking them to 25 points at the top of the table.
The victory came despite Lazio missing two penalties and capped a run of nine Serie A matches without defeat since their surprise elimination by Mantova in the Coppa Italia at the start of the season. During that league sequence, Lazio have recorded eight wins and one defeat.
Sassuolo suffered their third consecutive loss and have now gone five league matches without a win. They remain on eight points in 14th place.
Lazio’s next Serie A fixture is at home against Cagliari on Sunday. Sassuolo will travel to face Fiorentina at the club’s stadium.
