Manchester United are assessing whether to sell captain Bruno Fernandes next summer, according to a report by Football Insider.
The club are considering activating an option to extend the Portugal international’s contract, which expires at the end of the current season, before exploring offers for him.
Fernandes’ agreement includes a clause allowing Manchester United to prolong his deal by a further season. The club are expected to seek to trigger that option during the current campaign, with the intention of maximising the financial return from any eventual sale.
However, Manchester United will only decide whether to sell Fernandes once his situation at the club has been resolved.
The midfielder made comments in recent days criticising manager Michael Carrick after the team’s four-goal defeat by Italian side Como in the Champions League.
Carrick subsequently left Fernandes out of the side for Manchester United’s Premier League match against Bournemouth, which they lost 3-0.
