Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has apologised to the Chinese people after comments about a humorous image depicting him as former Chinese leader Mao Zedong sparked controversy.
The France captain acknowledged that his remark was clumsy and said he regretted causing offence to people in China and members of the Chinese community around the world.
“Those comments were clumsy, and I now understand that they hurt many people in China and within the Chinese community across the world,” Mbappe wrote in a message posted on social media.
He also stressed that he had never intended to insult anyone and expressed his respect for China and its history.
“I apologise to everyone who was hurt by my words. That was absolutely not my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry,” he added.
The controversy followed a video in which Mbappe reacted to a meme showing his face superimposed on Mao Zedong’s body. The incident prompted a strong response in China, with several Chinese companies announcing that they would end their partnerships with the player.
His comments also led to widespread criticism on social media, extending the issue beyond the sporting world.
Mbappe’s statement is intended to ease tensions and reaffirm his respect for the Chinese people as the consequences of the controversy continue to affect his commercial relationships.
