Vincent Kompany comeback date remains uncertain after Bayern Munich coach’s hospitalisation

Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks has confirmed that Vincent Kompany is making progress following his collapse in training but says there is no confirmed date for the Belgian’s return to work.

The 40-year-old was rushed to hospital on Friday after collapsing during a reserve-team training session. He had been battling a virus in the days leading up to the incident and had already missed some training sessions.

Kompany is expected to remain sidelined for several weeks, leaving Bayern to navigate a demanding run of fixtures without their head coach.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday ahead of Wednesday’s German Cup second-round clash against Magdeburg, Danks provided an update on Kompany’s condition after visiting him in hospital.

“I paid him a short visit yesterday,” Danks said.

“He is in good spirits. It looks like every day he is getting better. There are no major updates in terms of diagnosis or return to work. Let him rest, let him take his time.”

Bayern face demanding schedule without Kompany

Bayern must prepare for a busy spell across three competitions as Kompany continues his recovery.

The German champions host Magdeburg in the German Cup on Wednesday before turning their attention to Saturday’s Bundesliga showdown against title rivals Borussia Dortmund.

They will then travel to Madrid next week for a Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, adding to the demands on a squad already adjusting to the coach’s absence.

Danks has been involved in discussions with Kompany during his recovery but said their conversations have deliberately avoided football matters.

“We had some good conversations (with Kompany) but kept it away from football and specific tactics,” he said. “It was just a friendly chat and nice to see him and catch up.”

With no return date established, Bayern will continue to prioritise the Belgian’s recovery while preparing for a crucial stretch of matches.

Kane’s Ballon d’Or triumph brings contrasting emotions

Kompany’s health scare has come during a week of contrasting emotions for Bayern, with striker Harry Kane celebrating a major individual achievement after winning the Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Kane became the first Englishman in 25 years to claim the prestigious award, following Michael Owen’s success in 2001.

While the England captain’s triumph brought excitement to the club, Kompany’s hospitalisation has provided a sobering counterpoint for the squad.

Danks acknowledged the emotional extremes the team had experienced, praising the players’ unity as they dealt with the developments.

“For us, we are super professional,” he said. “Full extremes of life in the last week. Joys and highs for Harry and the lows of the last days.”

He added that the squad’s strong relationships had helped them navigate the difficult period.

“To get through these moments we had to rely on our chemistry, our team spirit and that definitely helped us,” Danks said.

Bayern will now look to maintain their focus on the pitch as Kompany continues to recover, with his return to the dugout remaining uncertain.
