Bayern Munich are seeking Harry Kane’s agreement to remove a clause that gives Tottenham Hotspur the chance to match any future offer for their former striker.
The London club, where Kane previously played, retain the right to equal any bid made for the club’s all-time leading goalscorer under the terms of his current contract at Bayern.
According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayern want to end Tottenham’s special position in the agreement as part of a planned renewal for the England striker.
The clause would allow Tottenham to remain in contention to re-sign Kane if he decided to leave the Allianz Arena at some point. However, Bayern are understood to want the player’s approval before removing the provision.
Kane’s view on the club’s request remains unclear.
There had previously been an expectation that Kane could consider a return to the Premier League when he entered the final 12 months of his Bayern contract. That possibility would have offered Tottenham an opportunity to pursue the forward, provided they were prepared to match any rival proposal.
The 32-year-old’s performances in Germany have, however, helped establish him at Bayern. He has scored 156 goals in 159 appearances for the club and won two Bundesliga titles since moving to Munich.
Kane also believes Bayern offer him the best realistic opportunity to win the Champions League before he retires. That ambition has significantly reduced Tottenham supporters’ hopes of seeing him return to the club in the future.
Reports in recent months have indicated that Bayern are nearing an announcement over a new contract for their English striker. Removing Tottenham’s matching right would be a key part of reshaping the existing agreement, although Kane has not yet made his position on that request known.
