Felix Uduokhai handed two-match Bundesliga ban after Union Berlin red card

Felix Uduokhai will miss Union Berlin’s next two Bundesliga matches after being handed a two-game suspension following his red card against FC Augsburg.

The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Monday that its sports tribunal had suspended the 29-year-old centre-back for unsporting conduct after he was sent off during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at the WWK Arena.

Uduokhai received his marching orders in the 19th minute after bringing down an opponent to prevent a clear goalscoring opportunity. Both the player and Union Berlin accepted the ruling, making the suspension final.

DFB-Pokal availability remains uncertain

Although Uduokhai is suspended for Union’s next two league fixtures, the ban does not apply to the DFB-Pokal. He could therefore feature in Tuesday’s second-round away match against FC Köln, provided he recovers from an injury sustained during the incident that led to his dismissal.

Union head coach Mauro Lustrinelli confirmed that the club was still assessing the defender’s condition ahead of the cup tie.

“We are still checking whether Felix will be available,” Lustrinelli said at Monday’s press conference.

The defender reportedly experienced discomfort in his right thigh after the challenge, although the extent of the injury has not yet been established.

Union face defensive selection challenge

Uduokhai’s suspension represents a setback for Union Berlin, who must now prepare for their upcoming Bundesliga fixtures without one of their defensive options.

The centre-back will miss the league meeting with Köln and the subsequent match against Freiburg, regardless of whether he recovers in time to play in the cup.

His possible absence against Köln in the DFB-Pokal would further complicate Lustrinelli’s selection decisions during a busy week.

Union will continue monitoring Uduokhai’s condition before determining whether he can feature on Tuesday. For now, his availability for the cup tie remains uncertain, while his two-match Bundesliga suspension is confirmed.
