Nico Williams has not doubt to stay at Bilbao

Spain international of Ghanaian descent Nico Williams insists he never doubted his decision to remain at Athletic Bilbao despite receiving multiple offers from top European clubs over the last three summer transfer windows.

Williams has established himself as one of the most exciting wingers in European football, attracting interest from several elite clubs following his impressive performances for both club and country.

The 24-year-old played an integral role in Spain’s triumph at the 2024 European Championship, where his pace, directness and attacking threat helped La Roja secure the continental title. He also played a key role in Athletic Bilbao’s Copa del Rey success, helping the Basque outfit end their 40-year wait for the trophy.

His performances attracted significant interest from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, with the clubs reportedly keen to secure his services during successive summer transfer windows.

However, Williams opted to remain at Athletic Bilbao, committing his long-term future to the club by signing a contract extension that runs until 2035.

Despite the numerous offers he received, the winger insists his decision was never in doubt, stressing that his desire to continue playing for the Basque side remained firm throughout the transfer speculation.

Speaking at a press conference, Williams explained that he was determined to stay at the club rather than pursue opportunities elsewhere.

“I never had any doubts about wanting to stay here,” Williams said.

“I received a huge number of offers over the last three summers. Nobody held a gun to my head to make me decide,” he added.

“Whether it was Barça or other clubs like PSG, Arsenal and many others, I said ‘no’ to everyone to stay here,” he stated.

Williams’ decision represents a major commitment to Athletic Bilbao, where he has continued to develop into an influential figure in the club’s attacking setup.

The winger has made eight appearances in La Liga this season, scoring once, as he looks to maintain his contribution to the team’s campaign.

His contract, which runs until the summer of 2035, provides long-term security for Athletic Bilbao and reinforces his determination to continue his career with the club despite interest from some of Europe’s biggest sides.
