Christopher Nkunku ruled out of RB Leipzig’s DFB-Pokal clash against Rot-Weiss Essen
RB Leipzig will be without Christopher Nkunku for Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal second-round encounter against Rot-Weiss Essen as the French forward continues to struggle with adductor problems.
Head coach Martín Demichelis confirmed the 28-year-old’s absence during Monday’s press conference, explaining that the club would take a cautious approach despite the injury not being considered serious.
“Christopher remains out of the squad. He has adductor problems. It’s nothing serious, but he won’t travel with us today,” Demichelis said.
Nkunku has already missed Leipzig’s 4-0 Bundesliga victory over SV Elversberg and will now sit out the cup tie as he continues his recovery.
Nkunku faces race to return against Schalke
Leipzig are hopeful that the former Chelsea and AC Milan forward could return to contention for Saturday’s Bundesliga away fixture against Schalke 04.
However, Demichelis admitted that his availability remains uncertain, with the club set to assess his condition over the coming days.
“We will see whether he manages to get fit in time,” the Leipzig manager added.
Nkunku’s potential return would provide Leipzig with another attacking option as they navigate a busy schedule across domestic competitions.
Leipzig prepare for difficult cup test
Despite facing third-tier opposition, Demichelis has warned his players against underestimating Rot-Weiss Essen, who will be determined to cause an upset in front of their home supporters.
Leipzig travel to Essen aiming to secure qualification for the third round, but they will have to do so without one of their key attacking players.
For Nkunku, the priority remains recovering fully from his adductor problems, with Saturday’s trip to Schalke representing a possible target for his return.
