Sekhukhune United coach Papi Zothwane hails Ndongani O’Niel’s rare defensive qualities
Sekhukhune United coach Papi Zothwane says new signing Ndongani O’Niel has brought an unusual combination of defensive ability and leadership to his squad.
The 26-year-old defender joined Babina Noko from Asante Kotoko this season and has played in four matches across all competitions. Sekhukhune United have remained unbeaten during that run and have also reached the second round of the Carling Knockout Cup.
Zothwane believes O’Niel’s rapid adjustment to South African football and the club’s environment has been particularly impressive. The coach also highlighted the defender’s ability to use both feet, read the game, compete in the air and contribute at set-pieces.
“Samba is a mature player, quality player, and a team player,” said Zothwane.
“Again, it’s very, very difficult to adjust from another country and start games and adjust quickly, in knowing names, the teammates, the atmosphere in the team, the culture it’s very, very difficult.
“And I think he’s adjusted very well. He’s one quality player that I’ve never seen in the longest time, a defender that can play with both legs, can anticipate, can jump and in the set-pieces again can give you something.
“It’s very rare to find in the modern game. I think he has added a good defensive structure and good leadership in our team, and he’s a player that any team can want to have.”
