Fernandes’ Instagram activity adds to mounting unrest at Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes has intensified the scrutiny surrounding Manchester United by liking an Instagram post warning that loyal people may eventually lose interest when they are pushed too far.

The 32-year-old captain was an unused substitute as Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on 31 October 2026. His decision to endorse the cryptic message came during one of the club’s most difficult periods in recent years.

The post featured a video of a huge stone figure carrying a giant boulder that was threatening to roll down a hill and destroy an entire village. As the figure tried to contain it, he unintentionally damaged one of the village’s buildings, prompting the villagers to turn on him and attack.

He then let go of the boulder, allowing it to roll down the hill and flatten the village.

The words written above the video were: “Do not push a loyal person to the point where they lose interest.” Its caption added: “Usually, the person holding everything together is the one nobody thinks to check on.”

Fernandes’ like was interpreted by followers as a deliberate message to Manchester United’s board and supporters, suggesting he had been carrying the team on his shoulders for much of his time at the club.

Growing tension at Old Trafford

Manager Michael Carrick’s decision to leave Fernandes out of the starting XI was viewed as a bold and unexpected call. It was only the sixth time the Portugal midfielder had been named among the substitutes for a Premier League match since joining Manchester United in 2020.

The decision came only days after Fernandes publicly criticised Carrick’s tactics following a humiliating 4-1 defeat by Como last week. The comments were widely seen as the beginning of an open dispute between the captain and his manager, according to The Sun.

Fernandes has been Manchester United’s most influential player during his six years at the club. He has scored 111 goals in 334 appearances and was named the Premier League’s player of the season last term after helping the club finish third.

However, supporters’ frustration boiled over after the Bournemouth defeat. Fans directed chants at Carrick as he left the pitch, while the players were also met with loud boos.

Carrick’s position at Old Trafford is now under serious threat, with reports suggesting his dismissal could be imminent. Eddie Howe is among the leading candidates being considered as his replacement.

Against that backdrop, Fernandes’ single Instagram like has been taken as a sign that he is prepared to confront the situation rather than remain silent.
