Gavi’s Barcelona future under scrutiny after historic El Clasico omission

Gavi was left out of an El Clasico for the first time since making his Barcelona debut, with manager Hansi Flick deciding not to use the midfielder in the meeting with Real Madrid.

The decision represents an unprecedented moment in the 22-year-old’s Barcelona career and is particularly significant given the importance he places on matches against the club’s traditional rivals.

Gavi had made his enthusiasm clear before the game, saying on Saturday: “In El Clasico matches, you have to go to war. It does not matter how either team arrives at the game; these are matches played until death.”

Despite that determination, Gavi remained on the bench throughout. His omission from the starting line-up was not considered a major surprise, but Flick’s decision not to give him any playing time was notable.

The midfielder has made only two starts this season and has been restricted to a small number of minutes overall. His struggle to secure a regular place has become increasingly apparent as the campaign has progressed.

Flick has already spoken to Gavi privately about his situation, explaining the level of competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield.

“Gavi has a great ambition and always wants to play,” Flick said in September. “He played, then he suffered an injury, and after that he returned to playing, but the team is doing well in its current set-up and he has to accept that.”

That message suggested Gavi would need to be patient, but his position now appears more difficult. Frenkie de Jong has returned and was involved against Real Madrid, creating another challenge in an area where Pedri and Rodri appear to have established themselves as first-choice options.

Fermin and Dani Olmo also provide Flick with more attacking alternatives. Marc Bernal’s characteristics and position mean he can also be preferred to Gavi in certain situations, with Bernal ahead of him in terms of minutes played in those roles.

The current circumstances could leave Gavi at the bottom of Flick’s midfield rotation. He has overcome serious physical problems, but now needs to regain consistency and demonstrate that he can have a sustained influence on the team.

His competitive character has never been in question. However, Gavi must now convince Flick that he deserves a place in a midfield where competition is becoming tougher with every passing week.

Gavi is contracted to Barcelona until 2030 and continues to show complete commitment to the club. Even so, his situation will be closely watched between now and January.

Flick generally relies on a limited rotation of players, and Gavi’s appearances have not been substantial even when changes have been made. His absence from such an important El Clasico is especially striking because of the impact he has traditionally had in these fixtures.

The listed La Liga schedule includes Barcelona and Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026, while Racing Santander and Real Madrid are listed for 01 November 2026.
