Sunderland eye January move for Mozambique winger Geny Catamo
Sunderland are reportedly considering a fresh move for Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo as they look to strengthen their attacking options during the January transfer window.
According to reports, the Black Cats continue to monitor the 25-year-old Mozambique international and could revive their interest in the coming months as head coach Régis Le Bris seeks to add more quality and creativity to his right flank.
Sunderland were reportedly prepared to offer around €40 million for Catamo during the summer transfer window, but Sporting CP stood firm on the winger’s €60 million release clause, preventing a deal from materialising.
The English club are now understood to be considering an offer in the region of €35 million as they explore the possibility of bringing the highly rated attacker to the Premier League.
However, any potential move will depend on Sunderland’s management approving the necessary transfer budget, with the club yet to establish whether it will be able to meet Sporting’s financial demands.
The Black Cats also face competition from several Premier League rivals, with Newcastle United, Everton, Leeds United, Bournemouth and Brentford reportedly monitoring the player’s progress.
Catamo’s performances have attracted attention because of his ability to operate on the right wing, cut inside and create opportunities in the attacking third. His versatility and attacking instincts are believed to make him an attractive option for Le Bris as Sunderland look to improve their offensive threat.
The Mozambique international has continued to feature prominently for Sporting CP during the 2026/27 campaign, recording two goals and four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions, according to the figures provided.
His contribution in the final third has further strengthened his reputation as an attacking option capable of influencing matches through both goals and creativity.
Catamo remains under contract with Sporting CP, who hold a strong negotiating position given the reported release clause. Sunderland would therefore need to find an agreement that satisfies the Portuguese club if they are to make progress in their pursuit.
With the January transfer window approaching, Sunderland’s interest is one to watch, although it remains unclear whether the club will submit a formal offer or meet Sporting’s valuation.
For now, Catamo continues to attract attention from several English clubs, with his future likely to depend on Sporting’s willingness to negotiate and the level of interest that develops ahead of the winter window.
