Reading FC striker Reece Evans earns Zimbabwe U23 call-up after impressive loan spell
Reading FC striker Reece Evans has earned his first international call-up after impressing during his loan spell at Bedford Town, with Zimbabwe U23 handing him an opportunity to help secure qualification for the Africa U23 Cup of Nations.
The 21-year-old has been included in Zimbabwe’s squad for their November tie against Mali, with the two sides set to meet home and away as they battle for a place at the youth tournament.
Evans’ selection marks a significant milestone in his career, having previously represented Northern Ireland at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Zimbabwe.
Evans rewarded for Bedford Town form
The forward has made a promising start to life at Bedford Town, who compete in the National League North, England’s sixth tier.
He has scored three goals and provided one assist in 11 league appearances, contributing to the Eagles’ campaign as they sit ninth in the standings.
His performances have helped attract international recognition, with Zimbabwe now offering him the opportunity to make his mark at U23 level.
Evans also found the net for Reading during pre-season in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Championship side Charlton Athletic, providing another glimpse of his attacking ability.
The striker’s progress at Bedford has come alongside his efforts to establish himself at club level, with his latest selection presenting an opportunity to take another step forward in his development.
Northern Ireland connection does not block switch
Evans previously featured for Northern Ireland’s youth teams until 2024, making 10 appearances across the UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers, the tournament itself and international friendlies.
During those outings, he scored three goals, gaining experience in international football before receiving his first opportunity with Zimbabwe.
His previous appearances for Northern Ireland do not automatically prevent him from representing Zimbabwe under FIFA eligibility regulations, although his eligibility remains subject to the applicable rules.
The call-up therefore provides a fresh international pathway for the Reading forward as he seeks to build on his recent performances in English non-league football.
FA Cup heartbreak for Bedford
Evans came close to helping Bedford Town achieve a memorable result in the FA Cup qualifying rounds but was unable to prevent their elimination against Cray Wanderers.
The striker scored in extra time to put Bedford ahead and move the Eagles closer to reaching the First Round Proper of the competition.
However, their advantage lasted only three minutes before Cray were awarded a penalty and converted from the spot to level the contest at 2-2.
Cray subsequently prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shootout to book their place in the First Round Proper, where they are scheduled to host Stockport County.
Although Bedford’s FA Cup journey ended in disappointment, Evans’ contribution highlighted his ability to influence important moments and added to an encouraging start to his loan spell.
The Zimbabwe U23 call-up now gives the 21-year-old another platform to demonstrate his qualities, with the upcoming two-legged encounter against Mali offering him the chance to contribute to his new national team’s qualification ambitions.
