Cucurella keeps Yamal quiet as Real Madrid claim Clasico victory

Real Madrid overcame Barcelona 2-1 at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday, with Marc Cucurella’s disciplined marking of Lamine Yamal playing a key part in the result.

According to Sport, Jose Mourinho’s side arrived with a clear plan, particularly when defending. Cucurella was assigned to track Yamal closely and used a physical approach to prevent the Barcelona winger from finding space or building momentum.

The plan frustrated Yamal throughout the match. In the 32nd minute, he complained to referee Martinez Munuera after Cucurella appeared to hold him and asked for the Real Madrid player to be shown a yellow card.

Yamal felt the incident was part of a pattern, saying it was not the first foul Cucurella had committed against him. He was also visibly frustrated when the defender escaped punishment, an incident that drew attention during the media coverage of the game.

Cucurella’s contribution was not limited to his defensive work. Shortly before half-time, he helped create a dangerous attack which ended with Kylian Mbappe scoring after Gerard Martin failed to clear the ball effectively.

His performance was one of the main reasons Real Madrid were able to maintain their defensive strength and contain Barcelona’s threat, with Yamal unable to produce the influence expected of him.

The contest also carried an added personal element because of comments Yamal made after Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid was officially announced.

Speaking to the Tiempo de Juego programme on Cadena COPE while discussing the 2026 World Cup, Yamal was also asked about Cucurella joining the Spanish club.

“I told him he would start the first match, but in the second game he would sit on the bench because I would destroy him,” Yamal said at the time.

The first Clasico meeting between the two players ultimately went Cucurella’s way. He nullified Yamal’s threat, avoided the booking the Barcelona player had requested and contributed to an attack that led to one of Real Madrid’s goals.

Real Madrid’s victory at Spotify Camp Nou therefore settled both the match and the early personal contest between Cucurella and Yamal, as the defender’s approach successfully subdued Barcelona’s young forward.
