Catalan media have sharply criticised Barcelona’s players and manager Hansi Flick after their 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid in the Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.
Several members of the Barcelona team were singled out after failing to meet expectations, with scrutiny extending from the defence and midfield to Flick. Real Madrid capitalised on their opponents’ mistakes and controlled key periods of the match, leaving a number of Barcelona players under sustained pressure.
Joao Cancelo was among the most heavily criticised. El Nacional gave the Portugal international a rating of 4 out of 10, arguing that he looked confused when operating on both sides of the defence.
Mundo Deportivo rated Cancelo at 5 out of 10 and highlighted his difficulties in dealing with Real Madrid’s attacks, as well as the limited effect he had going forward.
Pau Cubarsi also came under scrutiny for his role in the move that led to Kylian Mbappe’s decisive goal. The young defender was beaten for pace by Eduardo Camavinga during the attack.
Both Mundo Deportivo and Sport focused on Cubarsi’s problems in coping with Real Madrid’s forward movements, adding to the criticism directed at Barcelona’s defensive performance.
Lamine Yamal was another player whose display attracted negative reviews. Although he attempted to threaten Real Madrid from an attacking position, he was unable to make the difference expected of him.
Sport said Yamal’s performance was not enough, pointing to a lack of consistency and his failure to leave a significant mark on the Clasico.
Barcelona improved after half-time, with Pedri becoming more influential in midfield. He supplied the decisive pass for Raphinha’s equaliser after Barcelona had struggled to impose their rhythm during the opening 45 minutes.
Cadena SER, however, praised the work of Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde, saying the Real Madrid pair successfully restricted the influence of Pedri and Rodri while helping their side dominate the centre of the pitch.
The criticism also reached Flick, whose Barcelona side were unable to impose their usual style. The Catalan coverage questioned the accuracy of the team’s pressing and said the substitutions failed to alter the course of the match.
The accompanying fixture listings showed Barcelona scheduled to face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026. They also listed Racing Santander against Real Madrid in La Liga on 01 November 2026.
