Three players could miss Saturday’s Soweto derby if they are booked in their Carling Knockout Cup last-16 matches on Tuesday.
Orlando Pirates will host Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium in the first Soweto derby of the season, but both sides have players one yellow card away from suspension.
Pirates face Milford FC tomorrow night, while Chiefs welcome TS Galaxy as they attempt to progress in the competition.
Simphiwe Masilela is the only Pirates player in danger of missing the derby. The 22-year-old has already collected three yellow cards and would be suspended for the meeting with Amakhosi if he receives another against Milford.
Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou may therefore consider leaving the attacking midfielder out of the match to ensure he is available for Saturday’s fixture.
Masilela has established himself as an important part of the Buccaneers’ attacking play this season. His pace, technical ability and willingness to carry the ball forward have helped unsettle opponents, making his availability a significant consideration for Pirates before the derby.
Chiefs defenders face suspension risk
Kaizer Chiefs have two players on three yellow cards, with both at-risk squad members operating in defence.
Inacio Miguel and Thabo Moloisane will both miss the Soweto derby if they are booked against TS Galaxy.
Miguel has played every minute of Chiefs’ Betway Premiership matches so far this season. Moloisane, meanwhile, has featured in the league since missing the opening two games of the campaign.
The possible absence of either defender would be a setback for Amakhosi, who are already enduring a difficult period after being eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup.
All three players will need to avoid a booking in Tuesday’s Carling Knockout fixtures if they are to remain available for the meeting at FNB Stadium.
