Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup run ends on penalties as Da Cruz rues missed chances
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has expressed his disappointment after his side were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup by Red Arrows in the second preliminary round.
Amakhosi lost 3-2 on penalties after the tie was decided from the spot, with Da Cruz identifying missed chances in front of goal as the main reason for their elimination.
The coach also discussed the injury problems that affected the team during the campaign. Renaldo Leaner was forced off after suffering a late finger injury, with Bruce Bvuma coming on to replace him.
Kaizer Chiefs were already without around five players because of injuries, but Da Cruz said there were still positives to take from the performance despite the damaging result.
The defeat brings an early end to the club’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign and places added focus on their domestic commitments. Kaizer Chiefs face TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout round of 16 before the Soweto derby against Orlando Pirates.
Da Cruz also called on the Khosi Nation to support the players rather than subject them to further scrutiny during what he described as a difficult period for the team. He said backing from supporters would be important as Kaizer Chiefs look to respond to their continental disappointment.
