Barcelona v Real Madrid to receive La Liga’s most detailed TV coverage yet

La Liga is preparing its most extensive broadcast operation for a Clasico, with up to 38 cameras planned for Sunday’s meeting between Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou.

That figure could rise to 39 as the league seeks to provide comprehensive coverage of one of football’s biggest fixtures. More than 650 million viewers are expected to be part of the potential worldwide audience.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, cameras will be positioned throughout the stadium to capture the match from a wide range of angles. The production will go well beyond the usual 25 or 26 cameras typically used for Barcelona and Real Madrid fixtures.

The planned set-up includes goal cameras, goal-line cameras, coverage of the substitutes’ benches and the stadium tunnels. High-speed cameras will also be used to allow replays of key incidents from several different perspectives.

The expanded operation follows controversy over refereeing decisions during Real Madrid’s match against Sevilla. The report said television footage did not provide a conclusive angle on an incident involving Arda Guler and Kike Salas, highlighting the importance of additional views during major matches.

A connected ball is also expected to be used in a Clasico for the first time. The technology will provide extra data during play, while Ref Cam will offer viewers footage from the referee’s perspective.

La Liga is expecting the match to attract a potential international audience of more than 650 million people. Twenty-eight television organisations from international markets are also expected to travel to Barcelona to produce dedicated content around the fixture.

The match signal will be distributed across global platforms including Disney, DAZN and Canal+.

Pre-match coverage is scheduled to begin 90 minutes before kick-off. It will feature the teams’ arrival at the stadium, behind-the-scenes access to the dressing rooms and the players’ warm-up sessions, giving viewers an extended build-up before the game begins.

La Liga said the Clasico’s global reach had increased by 51% over the past two seasons compared with the previous four seasons, according to Sport.

The latest production plans reflect the growing international interest in the meeting between the two Spanish rivals, while also creating more opportunities to examine contentious moments during the match.
