Dani Olmo absence gives Barcelona youngster Orian Goren a chance to make El Clasico squad

Hansi Flick has called up 17-year-old midfielder Orian Goren from Barcelona’s reserve team to train with the first-team squad, with Dani Olmo’s injury opening the possibility of a surprise place in the squad for Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid at Spotify Camp Nou.

Spanish newspaper Sport reports that Goren, an Israeli player, joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy at an early age after his parents moved to the city for work. He holds both Israeli and Czech nationality, meaning he does not occupy a non-EU player place.

Flick was impressed by the teenager’s technical ability and understanding of the game during pre-season. Goren was included in first-team preparations at a time when a large number of academy players were involved because of the absence of international players.

He progressed through the selection process and featured in the Joan Gamper Trophy, coming on at half-time to replace team-mate Xavi Espart.

Goren can operate in several midfield roles. Flick has tended to use him in a more advanced position, closer to the opposition goal, while Barcelona Atletic manager Juliano Belletti has given him a more structured role at the centre of midfield.

The right-footed midfielder has remained a regular starter whenever he has been available for the reserve side. His only absences have come in matches that coincided with international breaks.

Comparisons with Pedri and Iniesta

Goren represents Israel Under-21s and made his first appearances at that level during the most recent international break, featuring in two European Championship qualifying matches.

His style has drawn comparisons with Pedri and Andres Iniesta, particularly because of his quick decision-making, range of technical options, ability to link the different lines of the team and quality in possession. Those characteristics fit the profile Flick seeks in midfielders, while Goren’s willingness to learn and improve has also been noted.

The German coach has been monitoring him for some time, and Olmo’s absence appears to have created a fresh opportunity for the teenager.

Should Goren be included in Barcelona’s first-team squad against Real Madrid, the match would represent a significant moment in his early career. His place in the squad, however, has not yet been confirmed, and there is no guarantee he will feature in the game.
