Yamal takes psychological advantage into back-to-back Mbappe showdowns

Lamine Yamal holds a 9-2 advantage over Kylian Mbappe in their head-to-head record as the Barcelona winger prepares to meet the Real Madrid forward twice in the space of two days.

The first meeting will take place on Sunday, when Barcelona host Real Madrid in La Liga at Spotify Camp Nou. The pair will then be central figures at the Ballon d’Or event in London on Monday.

According to Sport, Yamal has established a significant psychological advantage over Mbappe in their previous encounters. The 18-year-old has won nine of the matches involving the two players, while Mbappe has been on the winning side only twice.

Their first meeting came in the 2023-24 Champions League season, when Mbappe was still playing for Paris Saint-Germain. Barcelona won 3-2 at the Parc des Princes, but Paris Saint-Germain responded emphatically in the return fixture at Camp Nou, winning 4-1 with Mbappe scoring twice.

Yamal has scored six goals against teams for whom Mbappe has played. Mbappe, meanwhile, has found the net nine times against Barcelona, the club where Yamal came through.

The Frenchman’s second victory over Yamal came when Real Madrid beat Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga last season.

Yamal’s other nine wins have come in both Clasico fixtures and meetings between Spain and France. The most recent was the 2026 World Cup semi-final, in which both players started.

Spain, managed by Luis de la Fuente, won that match 2-0, although neither Yamal nor Mbappe scored.

Neither player found the net in the most recent match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in which they both played. That game was the Spanish Super Cup final, which Barcelona won 3-2 under manager Hansi Flick.

Both players were absent through injury from the latest Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou. Barcelona won that match 2-0 in May, a result which helped secure the La Liga title for the Catalan club.

Sunday’s fixture will also mark a first for Yamal and Mbappe. Although they have faced each other in several matches, neither has previously played in a Barcelona-Real Madrid Clasico at Spotify Camp Nou.

The meeting therefore gives Yamal the opportunity to extend his advantage over Mbappe at a stadium where both players have yet to feature in one of football’s biggest club fixtures.
