Moroccan players Ismael Baouf and Rafik El Arguioui scored as SC Cambuur thrashed Willem II 6-1 in the Eredivisie on Saturday, with the emphatic victory lifting Cambuur to 10th in the provisional standings.
The two promoted sides met in a match dominated by Cambuur, who established an early advantage and maintained their attacking pressure throughout the contest. Baouf and El Arguioui both found the net, while Willem II struggled to contain their opponents and remain competitive.
Cambuur made a fast start, taking the lead through Nicolas Binder in the ninth minute before Ilyes Hamache doubled the advantage four minutes later. The hosts continued their strong opening, with central defender Baouf adding a third goal in the 18th minute.
Baouf headed home from close range after receiving a cross from El Arguioui, who played a key role in the move. The goal further strengthened Cambuur’s position and underlined the Moroccan pair’s contribution to the team’s commanding performance.
Baouf and El Arguioui make their mark
Cambuur continued to control the match after building their early lead, with El Arguioui getting on the scoresheet in the second half.
The Moroccan attacking midfielder scored his side’s fifth goal in the 62nd minute, capitalising on a mistake by the Willem II goalkeeper to extend the home team’s advantage.
His goal followed Baouf’s first-half effort, ensuring both Moroccan players played a direct role in the comprehensive victory. Their contributions helped Cambuur maintain their momentum against a Willem II side that had few answers to the hosts’ attacking threat.
Willem II made changes at the interval, introducing Anass Zarrouk for the second half. The substitute eventually scored the visitors’ only goal in the 82nd minute, providing a response late in the match.
However, the goal did little to change the outcome, with Cambuur retaining a comfortable advantage as the game approached its conclusion.
Cambuur complete emphatic victory
Cambuur had the final say when Jason Ceka scored in the 90th minute, adding a sixth goal to complete the 6-1 win.
The result represented an important boost for Cambuur, who moved to 10th place in the provisional Eredivisie standings with 12 points. Their performance was built on an early burst of goals and sustained attacking pressure, with Baouf and El Arguioui among the standout contributors.
For Willem II, the defeat leaves the club at the bottom of the table with just two points. The visitors were unable to recover after conceding three times inside the opening 18 minutes and suffered a heavy loss against fellow newcomers to the Dutch top flight.
The contrasting positions of the two teams underline the significance of the result at this stage of the campaign. Cambuur will take confidence from their convincing display, while Willem II face the challenge of improving their results after another difficult outing.
With both Moroccan players finding the net, Saturday’s match also provided a memorable occasion for Baouf and El Arguioui as Cambuur secured one of their most emphatic victories of the season.
