Max Eberl says Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is in a stable condition but will remain in hospital for several more days after collapsing during training with a viral infection.
Assistant manager Aaron Danks will take charge of the team in training and matches until Kompany has recovered.
“The good news is that Kompany’s condition is stable,” Bayern Munich sporting director Eberl said at a news conference. “I spoke to him last night, and also to his wife.”
“It has not been easy for any of us. He collapsed on the pitch yesterday and will remain in hospital for a few more days while he undergoes further examinations.”
Eberl added: “This shows once again that health is the most important thing in life, not football. So we all wish him a speedy recovery.”
Kompany’s illness became apparent during Bayern’s Bundesliga meeting with Leipzig in the sixth round, which Bayern won 6-1.
The Belgian experienced problems linked to the virus which left him unable to climb stairs. He subsequently missed Bayern’s training session on Monday before the Champions League match against Arsenal.
Kompany returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s meeting with Arsenal, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Eberl said the club would not rush the manager’s return.
“Everyone at Bayern Munich is standing together. The most important thing is to establish the cause of his illness and for him to return to full fitness,” he said. “He will not come back until he is medically fit.”
“The doctors have been looking for the cause all the time. He had some minor problems last week. The doctors are doing nothing other than trying to find out what the cause is.”
Eberl said initial tests had produced some results, although more information was needed.
“The examinations have produced some findings, but more results are needed to determine the exact nature of the illness and how long his recovery will take,” he said.
“I am not a doctor, but we can support him with love and encouragement.”
Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga table with 14 points, level with Borussia Dortmund but ahead on goal difference.
They are due to face Freiburg on Sunday in the seventh round of the Bundesliga.
