Issa Diop breaks silence on red card controversy in Ipswich Town’s draw with Nottingham Forest

Ipswich Town defender Issa Diop has defended the decision to show him a yellow card rather than a red during Friday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Nottingham Forest, insisting Leif Davis was in position to cover the danger.

Diop avoided dismissal after a VAR review of his challenge on James McAtee, who appeared to be through on goal during the encounter on October 23.

Referee Thomas Bramall initially waved play on without awarding a free-kick before the video assistant referee intervened to assess whether the Ipswich defender had denied Forest an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Bramall was subsequently invited to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, raising expectations that Diop could be sent off. However, the official opted to issue a yellow card instead.

The decision became one of the major talking points of the contest, with Diop later explaining why he believed the punishment was appropriate.

Diop insists Davis was covering

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, the Ipswich defender maintained that McAtee was not denied a clear goalscoring opportunity because Davis was available to intervene.

“I don’t think it’s a red, I went to tackle because I saw Leif Davies covering.

“He (James McAtee) puts the ball wide and Leif was there to cover. I don’t think it’s a red. I was quite confident about that.”

Diop’s comments reflected his belief that the presence of Davis should have been considered when determining whether the challenge warranted a dismissal.

The defender argued that his teammate’s position meant McAtee was not necessarily left with an unobstructed route to goal, supporting his view that a yellow card was sufficient punishment.

The intervention of VAR ensured the incident received further scrutiny after Bramall initially allowed play to continue. However, following his review, the referee decided against sending Diop off.

Forest strike first as Ipswich fight back

The controversy came during an encounter in which both sides had to settle for a point after sharing two goals.

Nottingham Forest took an early lead through Neco Williams, putting the visitors in front and forcing Ipswich to respond.

The hosts eventually found their equaliser just before half-time when Julio Enciso scored to bring the contest level at 1-1.

Neither side could find a decisive goal after the break, leaving the points shared at the end of a match in which the debate surrounding Diop’s challenge threatened to overshadow the goals.

For Ipswich, the draw provided a point from a difficult contest, while Forest were left to reflect on their missed opportunity to secure a victory away from home.

The result also ensured that Diop’s disciplinary reprieve remained a central talking point after the final whistle, particularly given the potential consequences had Bramall decided to upgrade the punishment to a red card.

VAR decision takes centre stage

The incident highlighted the importance of assessing whether a defender has denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity when determining the appropriate disciplinary sanction.

Although McAtee appeared to have an opportunity to advance towards goal, Diop’s argument centred on Davis’ position and the possibility of the covering defender preventing a clear chance.

The referee’s decision to show a yellow card ultimately allowed Diop to remain on the pitch for the remainder of the contest.

While the incident generated debate, the Ipswich defender stood by the official’s verdict, maintaining that the covering presence of Davis justified the decision not to send him off.
