Orlando Pirates reached the CAF Champions League group stage after a convincing 4-0 victory over Namibian champions African Stars at Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday.
Pirates took control of the tie with a 1-0 away win in the first leg, leaving African Stars needing to overturn the deficit to progress. Instead, the Buccaneers produced another dominant performance to complete a 5-0 aggregate success.
They made the ideal start in the second leg, settling any early nerves when Thapelo Mokobodi opened the scoring in the 17th minute. The goal came at the end of a well-constructed move involving Thalente Mbatha and Simphiwe Masilela.
The South African side continued to dictate the contest, creating more pressure and limiting the threat posed by the Namibian champions. Their control was rewarded shortly before half-time when Masilela released Evidence Makgopa, who went through on goal and doubled the advantage.
With Pirates already leading comfortably on aggregate, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side#### maintained the same intensity after the interval rather than allowing African Stars a route back into the tie.
Makgopa then switched from scorer to creator, setting up young Mpho Padime to score his first goal for the club. The finish made it 3-0 and further underlined Pirates’ superiority.
The hosts added a fourth goal with 10 minutes of normal time remaining. Makgopa completed his brace to cap an outstanding individual performance and leave African Stars with no prospect of a comeback.
Pirates’ progress takes them into the CAF Champions League group stage, where they will join clubs including Petro de Luanda and Young Africans.
