Paris Saint-Germain are assessing their options for a new left winger after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the match against Barcelona.
The injury is expected to rule the Paris Saint-Germain forward out for the rest of the season, barring an unexpected recovery. According to Sport, the French club had already been planning to enter the January transfer market to strengthen on the left side of Luis Enrique’s attack.
Paris Saint-Germain retain several attacking options, including Ousmane Dembele, who was also injured against Barcelona, as well as Ferran Torres, Mika Godts, Desire Doue, Akliouche and Quentin Ndjantou.
However, the club’s financial position means it can consider a significant investment. Paris Saint-Germain generated €333.4m from player sales during the most recent summer transfer window, after conducting its business with considerable financial discipline.
Bradley Barcola was the largest contributor to that figure following his move to Liverpool, which brought €125m into the Paris Saint-Germain coffers.
L’Equipe reported: “Paris is already looking for a new player to strengthen the wing positions during the winter transfer window. The player must be young and have significant potential.”
That profile has opened the door to a number of possible targets ahead of the next transfer window.
Williams among potential targets
Eurosport says Nico Williams is regarded as a serious candidate, with Paris Saint-Germain having monitored the Spain international closely for several years.
Goal has also placed Algerian Ibrahim Maza on the club’s list of potential targets. Maza is considered one of the leading emerging talents at Bayer Leverkusen.
Sky, meanwhile, has identified Mathias Albert as another player attracting interest. The youngster is gaining experience with Borussia Dortmund.
Paris Saint-Germain also have the option of making an immediate signing rather than waiting for January. The club could use the exception known as the “joker” rule in Ligue 1.
Introduced by the competition at the beginning of the 21st century, the provision allows a club to sign one player from another team competing in either Ligue 1 or Ligue 2.
Paris Saint-Germain would be eligible to use the exception because of the serious injury suffered by Kvaratskhelia. Despite that possibility, the club’s final decision is expected to be made in January.
