Wydad AC appoint Nasreddine Nabi as head coach after sacking Paulo Sérgio

Wydad Athletic Club have appointed Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi as their new head coach following the dismissal of Paulo Sérgio after a disappointing start to the Moroccan Botola Pro season.

Nabi has signed a one-year contract, with an option to extend, and will arrive with eight members of his coaching staff as he seeks to revive the club’s campaign.

The appointment marks a return to Moroccan football for Nabi, who coached Wydad’s arch-rivals Raja Casablanca during the second half of last season.

Wydad have struggled for consistency in the opening weeks of the campaign, winning just one of their four matches.

Their only victory came against Difaa El Jadida, whom they defeated 2-0, but they have since suffered a 3-1 home defeat by Wydad Temara.

The Casablanca-based club have also drawn 0-0 with COD Meknes and 1-1 with Amal Tiznit at the Mohammed V Sports Complex.

Those results have left Wydad with five points from a possible 12, raising concerns among supporters about the team’s ability to challenge for domestic honours.

The poor run of form ultimately led to Sérgio’s departure, with the club turning to Nabi in the hope of restoring stability and improving their performances.

Nabi now faces the task of rebuilding Wydad’s competitiveness and meeting the expectations of a club with a strong domestic pedigree.

His recent experience in Moroccan football could help him settle quickly, although his previous spell at Raja Casablanca adds another dimension to an appointment that will attract considerable attention.

With Wydad eager to recover from their difficult start, Nabi will be under pressure to deliver immediate improvements and put the club back on course to compete for silverware.
