Ngapandouetnbu’s six Ligue 2 clean sheets put Marseille on alert

Simon Ngapandouetnbu has recorded six clean sheets for Montpellier HSC in Ligue 2 this season, a tally no club in the top two divisions of Europe’s five major leagues has surpassed.

The 23-year-old Cameroon goalkeeper has become a key figure in Montpellier’s defensive performances, helping the club establish the best clean-sheet record across those competitions. His consistency has also increased interest in a possible return to Olympique de Marseille, although his immediate focus remains on helping Montpellier regain their Ligue 1 status.

Ngapandouetnbu has continued to enhance his reputation with a series of dependable displays for the MHSC. The six shutouts underline both the strength of Montpellier’s defence and the growing influence of their goalkeeper.

The Cameroon international’s form is particularly notable as he continues his development at the age of 23. While his performances are attracting attention beyond Montpellier, his short-term future appears to be centred on completing the club’s promotion mission.

Marseille retain interest in former goalkeeper

Olympique de Marseille are believed to be monitoring Ngapandouetnbu’s progress and could consider bringing him back to the club in the summer of 2027. The reported plan would be to make him their first-choice goalkeeper.

Ngapandouetnbu was developed by Marseille and retains a close connection with the club. Olympique de Marseille also hold a priority buy-back arrangement on the player, giving them an advantage should they decide to pursue a deal.

However, any move would not be straightforward. The goalkeeper is under contract with Montpellier until 2028, leaving the Herault club in a strong negotiating position. His current form is also likely to strengthen his sporting value.

Despite the interest attributed to Marseille, Ngapandouetnbu is not thought to be looking to leave Montpellier in the immediate future. Africafoot reported exclusively that the Cameroon goalkeeper intends to continue with the MHSC.

His stated priority is to help the club return to Ligue 1. He remains committed to Montpellier’s project and wants to see through his role in the attempt to restore the club to France’s top flight.

That stance reflects the maturity he has shown in focusing on his current responsibilities rather than the possibility of a return to Marseille. For Montpellier, keeping a goalkeeper performing at this level would be a significant asset in their promotion campaign.

Montpellier remain the priority

Ngapandouetnbu’s six clean sheets have placed him at an important stage of his career and fuelled speculation about what comes next. Olympique de Marseille may look to activate their interest in 2027, but the goalkeeper’s immediate objective is clear: remain with Montpellier and help secure promotion.

Montpellier will soon play their 10th Ligue 2 match of the season against Red Star.
